La fiabilidad de los grandes sistemas (hosts, mainframes) ha sido un argumento de peso para que las grandes empresas diseñasen su informática sobre estos sistemas. Pero, ¿a qué coste?

La tecnología "grid computing" permite conseguir niveles de fiabilidad y de proceso superiores a los grandes sistemas a coste sensiblemente inferiores.

Esta tecnología requiere un rediseño de las aplicaciones para aprovecharse de esta ventajas de esta infraestructura, sin embargo, este coste se compensa sobradamente con los beneficios y ahorros de este tipo de soluciones.
